Across Delaware, a student’s educational experience can look very different depending on where they live. While some communities offer strong academic outcomes and pathways to postsecondary success, others continue to face persistent challenges that limit opportunity for students. Most data assessment relies on graphs and spreadsheets that can be difficult to understand without the full picture.
To help illuminate that picture, DelawareKidsCAN developed an interactive data tool that visualizes educational opportunity across the state. The Delaware Educational Opportunity Map brings together publicly available data on student performance and school outcomes and displays it geographically, allowing users to explore how opportunity varies from community to community and where significant gaps persist.
The map highlights key indicators of student success, including academic proficiency in core subjects and other publicly reported measures of school performance. Users can explore results at the school and district level, as well as examine outcomes for specific student populations.
These opportunity gaps directly contribute to a lifetime of economic, health, and social inequity. Educational attainment shapes access to economic livelihood, which in turn influences a person’s ability to secure stable employment, afford housing, put food on the table, and access quality health care. When students are not given equitable access to strong educational foundations, the consequences extend far beyond the classroom and can persist across generations.
This tool is not intended to label communities or reduce schools to a single measure. Instead, it is designed to support informed dialogue. Delaware’s future depends on ensuring that every student, regardless of background or ZIP code, has access to a high quality education. Visualizing educational opportunity across the state is one step toward that goal. By making data accessible and understandable, the Delaware Educational Opportunity Map equips families, educators, and policymakers with the information necessary to engage in meaningful conversations about improvement and equity. It is our hope that this map is one more tool in the tool box for creating actionable change in Delaware education.
